Discovering the Craft and Culture of Kawane Tea in Shizuoka

As part of our ongoing work with Kawane tea, which we have been offering since last year, we had the honor of attending a traditional tea offering ceremony hosted by the Kawane-hon-cho Tea Industry Promotion Council.

This experience provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with local tea producers and stakeholders, allowing us to gain deeper insight into the philosophy and dedication behind Kawane tea culture.

Kawane, one of Shizuoka’s most respected tea regions, is not a matcha producing region, but is renowned for its premium lightly steamed green tea known as asamushi sencha. This style is celebrated for its delicate flavor, clarity, and refined balance, reflecting the region’s craftsmanship and natural environment.

During the ceremony, tea was offered in a solemn and respectful atmosphere, reminding us of the profound cultural significance embedded in Japanese tea. Observing the handling of tea leaves and the craftsmanship involved also highlighted the continuous efforts required to maintain exceptional quality.

In recent years, the tea industry has been undergoing significant changes, including a growing focus on organic cultivation and matcha production. Despite these shifts, we were deeply impressed by Kawane strong commitment to preserving its premium quality, distinctive flavor, and traditional hand rolling techniques.

As a brand working to bridge Japanese tea culture with global wellness, this experience was particularly meaningful to us.

At Shizuoka Matcha Therapy, we have been working with Kawane tea since last year. Through this experience, our understanding of the cultural and philosophical foundation behind it has deepened significantly.

This visit has reaffirmed our commitment to sharing the true value of Japanese tea with audiences both in Japan and around the world. Moving forward, we will continue to honor and communicate the spirit of these tea producing regions globally.
